What Is LASIK Surgery?

LASIK is an outpatient procedure. It takes just around ten minutes in one eye.

Your doctor may decide to operate on both eyes on the same day or he may wait for a few days to see how it goes on one eye before working on the other.

At Yesnick Vision, Dr. Yesnick provides full service co-management, which means that you can rest assured that you are receiving the best pre and post operative care and careful recommendations to the top surgeons with the latest equipment.

Overview Of LASIK Surgery

LASIK (Laser Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis) is a surgical procedure conducted on the eye to correct vision problems due to refractive errors. LASIK can be used to return 20/20 vision in most cases where the patient has one of the following eye conditions:

  • Myopia (near-sightedness)
  • Hyperopia (far-sightedness)
  • Astigmatism (overall blurred vision)

How Does It Work ?

LASIK uses a laser to correct vision. A thin hinged flap is created off the outer layer of the cornea using a femtosecond laser or a microkeratome blade.

During the procedure, an excimer laser is used to remove some corneal tissue from under this flap while the surgeon folds it back. Thereafter, he lays the flab back to cover the area from where tissue was removed.

To correct myopia, LASIK aims to flatten the cornea while for hyperopia, LASIK needs to create a steeper cornea. To cure astigmatism, LASIK works to smooth out the shape of the cornea.

You need to have a proper evaluation with your doctor to see if you are a good candidate for LASIK.

  • You are at least 18 years old (21 years for some lasers)
  • You are not pregnant or breastfeeding
  • You are not taking certain prescription drugs like oral prednisone
  • Your prescription glasses are stable
  • Your eyes are otherwise healthy
  • You are not suffering from health conditions like diabetes, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, glaucoma, cataract, etc.
  • You do not have a history of dry eye

LASIK cannot correct presbyopia. It can, however, correct one eye for near sightedness and one eye for far sightedness. If you go for monovision correction of this sort, you may be able to forgo the need of using reading glasses. But, you will have to take other things into consideration. After such a surgery, you are likely to face issues like disturbed depth perception and poor vision quality because both the eyes do not work together. Also, you may need glasses for tasks that demand sharp vision.

  • Consider if you are happy with glasses or contacts instead.
  • Talk to your doctor about the expectations you can have about LASIK. For example, if you are already suffering from very poor vision, LASIK may not correct your vision completely
  • Consider your work environment and your lifestyle to decide whether or not LASIK is suitable

What To Expect

Eye drops are used to numb the eye during the surgery. You may feel a pressure on the eye but nothing painful. After the effect of anesthesia wears off, you may experience the following

  • Mild to moderate discomfort including a mild burning sensation and watery. This should get better after a few hours.
  • Light-sensitivity for a few hours after surgery
  • Blurred vision on the day of surgery. This usually gets a lot better the next day.

In case you experience more than mild eye pain, and it does not get better with over-the counter pain medication, call your surgeon.

After surgery, avoid impact sports and other similar activities for four weeks, avoid swimming and hot tubs for two weeks, and avoid driving till your vision is good enough for safety.

I came back here after moving to a different area. I tried another optometrist but it didn't compare. I'm glad I came back. I was able to make a same day appointment. Staff was friendly and service was fast. I went through a few pairs and finally found the one I liked with thier help. Definitely will be coming back. This place is also family friendly.
