Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) is a disease that causes loss of vision in the center of the field of vision.
The types of AMD are commonly referred to as wet and dry. In the wet type, a growth of leaky blood vessels is present under the retina. In the dry type, the center of the retina deteriorates. Our vision center in Las Vegas is committed to serving our patients as effectively as a possible way to treat, detect, and possibly prevent the effects of age-related macular degeneration, and as such, our Las Vegas optometrist stays up-to-date on the latest research to serve you better.

This optical disease is one of the diseases that is most affected by genetics. Two genes (CFH and ARMS2), specifically affect AMD genetically, that contribute not only to who is affected and a candidate for AMD, but these genes also affect how the person responds to therapy. These 2 genes also affect if a patient is able to benefit from a nutritional treatment of high zinc and an antioxidant supplement (B-carotene, vitamin E, Vitamin E). The presence of the 2 genes cause a percentage of patients to not respond to the nutritional therapy and may be negatively affected, while another percentage sees markedly improved results. Overall, the benefits are great, but the studies show the importance of genetic testing.

Age-Related Macular Degeneration
There is new research in the optical world that is confirming supplements use in the area of preventing age-related macular degeneration. The Age-Related Eye Disease (AREDS) study shows that there is a great benefit to treating AMD with the AREDS formula despite the genetic makeup of the patient, reducing the advancement of the disease. The AREDS formula is the nutritional supplement used to treat and try to prevent the progression of AMD. This study found that the effect seems to be on the wet AMD rather than the dry AMD. The study confirmed the utter importance of genetic testing when treating AMD. It shows that the medicine related to the treatment can be customized and tailored on an individual basis depending on the genetic makeup of the patient.
